I listed all of the points of interest between the Haul Road and Galena for a few reasons. Most of them are selfish. I want to remember them. I want it to show the vastness. Having them all listed together also shows the combination of naming influences. These landmarks once served a measure of navigation and of distance. They may come up now and then over a moose hunting conversation. Anyone who finds their way to this little splinter of the internet is either family, one of my traveling companions, or a person who has a genuine interest in the Yukon River. In that case, stop reading this and pick up a copy of this book. It is awesome.
The river seems to gain more force here. There is less braided water. Ruby was hung over. An entire town was hungover. That is kinda funny. They had celebrated a wedding the night before and did not even pretend to be a functioning village the next day. I like that. We should all move towards having that as an option and a priority. The Fourth of July in Tanana was nice. The people are very friendly. They need to fix their pay phone in the store though. The '1' kept sticking. The Rapids is a place that sticks out in my mind. Standing wave seemed to come out of nowhere. It was dary, cold, and went by entirely too fast. I would love to see it again. Galena seemed a bit darker to me than the other towns in this stretch. The military had all but pulled out of there and left an odd collection of out of place buildings. I got to have a beer and a burger though. Also got a heck of a sunburn.
