Subaru

Hello,

In 1980 my dad gave me something special.  It was a 1968 slant-six Dodge side-step pickup.  The possibilities were endless.  It was black and had little rust.  I could do anything with it.  I could cut and haul wood for cash, a set of chromed out exhaust stacks and a lift kit could have made it into a fine show rig.  I had not thought of that truck for years until last month.  You see, I am the proud owner of a Subaru Forester.

This fact in itself not a huge deal.  It is a Subaru after all.  It is kind of my minnie-me-SUV.  It is the first new vehicle I have ever owned and is quite nice.  The 68 Dodge has me thinking and evaluating though.  I am going to be a dad.  Kerty and I are going to have a little girl.  That is huge news and we are very excited.  My dilemma lies here.....will my daughter share my excitement when I finally turn over the keys to her of a 17 year old Subaru Forester?  Is the Subaru Forester the 68 Dodge sidestep of the 2000’s?  Is there such a thing?  Will she be laughed at?  Can I do that to her?  Will I be able to afford to do something else?

We upgraded options on the Forester.  We got the cargo/doggie divider and the tow package.  I have the divider figured out.  It is there to keep the toy poodle from entering the spaciousness of the main compartment.  We have 3 dogs that collectively weigh over 325 pounds.  The pictures on Subaru’s website need to have a common item placed in them for a point of reference when it comes to size.  I could never put one dog back there much less three.  The trailer tow package is a joke.  I could not tow a picture of my boat.  What is my daughter to think?

Fatherhood does not scare me.  I suspect I have muddled my way through much worse.  I am growing tired of advice from friends about what to expect though.  “Just you wait boy, your life is about to change.....Things will never be the same.”  Now I appreciate the input from these friends because I have known them for years.  I have known them long enough to remember that they said the same damn things about when micro-beers got popular and they started making four stroke outboard motors.  Revolution and earth shattering change is relative.

I used to have a swell Honda quad.  I named it Bob.  Yesterday I spent $300 on a baby jogger manufactured by a company named Bob.  I have never been happier.
